A Family Craft Since 1932
Sun Upholstery & Fabric owner, Stan Newby, began his upholstery business in 2001, but his experience in the industry dates back to childhood. Stan’s grandfather, Charles, learned the craft of upholstery while working at Milne Chair Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee in the 1930s. After several years with the company, Charles opened his own successful upholstery business. His son, Robert, helped him with small tasks as a child, and later in life, Robert decided to continue the family legacy. Robert had eight children, and Stan is the oldest boy. Just as his father helped his grandfather, Stan lent a helping hand in the family business. As a child, Stan made buttons and as he grew up, he started taking on more tasks including cutting, sewing, and delivering furniture.
In 2001, Stan opened his upholstery business in East Tennessee as Newby’s Custom Upholstery. Stan decided to revamp the business in 2012 and changed the name to Sun Furniture Upholstery & Fabric. Today, Sun Furniture Upholstery & Fabric still operates as a family business in Knoxville. You will often find Stan, along with his brother, John, and son, Andrew, working in the shop, and they welcome you to say hello!
